Clan League Check List

Taking your team to a league for “Pro” play is one of those goals clan leaders aim for, and one that the team eagerly awaits. Far too often a clan is stuck, they don’t ever make it to the leagues, and disappointment follows. The problem comes from the simple idea of…

“Are we Ready?”

That won’t be stopping you anymore, below you will find a Check-List to get you set for any league as well as solid advice from the community. I collected several tips from current and former league gamers, league owners, and lessons learned from teams just beginning to compete in leagues.

Must Haves:

I have found a few things, mostly common sense, that your team MUST have or do prior to even considering league gaming. I didn’t go out and find every league, but the ones I did review required the following:

- No Cheats. ( I have not found a cheaters league yet, still looking)

- Punctuality. (If you are late or miss the match, you forfeit.)

- Have Good Sportsmanship. (You will lose here and there, don’t be a dick about it.)

the Check List:

Here is the list, these should apply to any clan on any league in any game. If you accomplish the items on this list, consider yourself ready to join a league and fair well. More than anything else, make the CHOICE to move forward and try it out. Don’t be held back by the notion that you are unprepared.

  1. Set up a Voice channel for your league team
  2. Name, promote, and identify your league team (make a logo?)
  3. Select the league you want to play in, and learn EVERYTHING you can about the rules and requirements of the league
  4. Establish a small, core group of clan members who will build the league team (2-4 is good)
  5. Maintain a roster of clan members who want to be on the team (fill-ins & core replacements)
  6. Develop a training system for your league team (experience makes for good training!)

Thats it! If you have these simple things in place then there is no reason not to get started. Below you will find some extra tips to help you along from this point, but I urge you to pursue actual league competition. Remember that you will lose, you will have to learn how to play in this new environment. No amount of preparation will change that, you must learn the league and your competition.

Improvement Concepts:

Below is some of the best advice I received as well as some philosophy about league gaming…

  • You need a core team to run the group, with additional members available to play as well. This allows for stability and ensures each time the team takes the field they have experienced members on the team.
  • Your team should be made up of the members who have the most open schedules and are capable of meeting attendance and training requirements. Skill amounts for nothing if they cannot make the matches.
  • Learn how to lose, don’t let loses discourage you from getting better. Record your matches and play them back to see what went wrong and adjust your training to work better.
  • Develop your tactics, get a playbook and work the map with a plan. Speed is the key to winning, if you know your map and the plan… it comes down to who can work their plan fastest.
  • Let all clan members participate in the league team training if they want to, the more knowledgeable gamers you have to pool from the better your chances of meeting attendance requirements.
  • Don’t go to the match expecting to lose, keep high spirits and remember your tactics.
  • Don’t fall apart, your league team should be able to use teamwork and communicate well without fighting or squabbling over position or power.
  • HAVE FUN. You MUST enjoy this experience, win or lose. If your league team isn’t having a good time, then no one is going to be happy about it. Make sure everyone understands the point is to have fun on the big stage!

I had a lot of help putting this together, and I cannot really quote everyone word-for-word so I have a “credits” list. I have also included these guys websites where I was provided with them.

My sincere gratitude for those who made this better!

Thanks!!!

One thing we often do is do a little research on teams before we play them, ie their record, key players etc

Before we match we often scrim some of the top teams in the devision to aid familiarisation of maps and strats, We did generally use a group of around 8-10 players as some were better in modes at others and due to life schedules

We had a “bench” if anyone is having an issue or simply playing bad, or the match is a long one, we tend to issue a sub just to bring somebody fresh in which most of the time proved beneficial
